The Advent Event

THE ADVENT EVENT

Well, here we are at the end of the year with November in its final days and staring at the beginning of December.  Almost hard to say, like the word December sort of gets stuck in the throat!  It’s a crazy month where we get so sidelined by parties, shopping, concerts, and extra family gatherings that we can almost pass ourselves coming and going. If there ever was a month that needed a shoe horn to get all of the stuff shoved into it, it is December!  Are you feeling a little frazzled in your life right about now?  Is your Christmas shopping list complete?  Do you have the Christmas cards and letters stamped and mailed?  Is the house clean for the parties and are the decorations up? Have you had a chance to get the tree picked out, trimmed and decorated?  Yep, the laundry list of things to do is long, and the free evenings and weekends are often in short supply.  It is in the midst of all of this hustle and bustle that the season of Advent beckons us to slow down, watch, wait, and listen.  Sort of counter to everything we are feeling at this moment isn’t it?  But that is Advent.  And let me tell you, it is needed in this season just before Christmas.

I’m challenging you and your family to slow down this month. That’s right….slow down.  Maybe pick something that you AREN’T going to do this month (no, sorry, worship doesn’t count!).  Maybe find a new tradition around the holidays that involves turning electronics off and connecting with other human beings the old fashioned way.  It might involve sitting in front of a fire and talking as a family or with some friends.  Maybe share some great questions like, “What does Jesus really mean to you and how does He influence your life?”, or “What are your hopes and dreams for the coming year?”, or “What part of your faith life do you really need God to help you with right now?” etc.  Questions like these, face-to-face with another person, helps us to slow down, watch, wait, and listen for God.

Advent is a strange season.  A season of waiting for a Christ child to be born, but also living in 2013 where we know the other side of the cross and resurrection of Jesus.  It is a season of mind games as we wait in wonderment for the coming babe to be born, but also wait in wonderment for the kingdom of God to break forth in our world.  It involves holy imagination.  And, holy imagination works best when you are not distracted.  This month, make worship, prayer, and devotion time with God a top priority for you and your family.  Here at St. John’s we are working hard to continue helping you connect in worship.  We will have our Sunday School Christmas program as well as our Christmas Music worship service where our musical groups help to lift our hearts to God. And, we will have our three Christmas Eve worship services at 3:30, 5:00, and 10:00pm.  And we will slow ourselves down so that we can experience, as if brand new, the birth of the Hope for the world, Jesus the Christ.  Happy Advent dear apostles of St. John’s!  I look forward to slowing down with you.  Lord knows, 2014 will bring plenty of hustle and bustle all its own. Slow down while we can!

Blessings,

Pastor Jeff
