Children & Families

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.”
(Matthew 19:14)

We love children at St. John’s!  In fact, St. John’s is a “Cherish Our Children” congregation. Because we love kids we offer a variety of educational and service opportunities for all ages.

Quiet Bags are available on the stand just outside the Sanctuary doors.  These bags contain quiet, busy activities that children can enjoy during the service.  Children’s bulletins are also in pockets on this stand.
There is a staffed nursery available during worship service times providing quality child care, especially for younger children.

Our nursery is a wonderful, safe, and caring place for younger children who are more comfortable in a room full of toys than in the worship service.  The nursery is available each Sunday morning during both worship services.

Sunday School – Sunday School is open to all children 3 years old – 4th grade.  Children go directly to class before either 9:00 or 10:45  worship and have their own age-appropriate gathering music and message/lesson in “The Harbor”.  The children then join worship after the sermon so that they can participate in Holy Communion and the end of service .   Children are welcome to join Sunday School any time throughout the school year!

Our Sunday School curriculum is “WHIRL.”   The lessons correspond to the Revised Standard Lectionary, helping kids and families connect more deeply to worship and Sunday school.  Each Whirl lesson is centered on a scripture from the Lectionary, using age appropriate resources.  Lesson materials include videos with animated characters who model what it’s like for kids to go through the questions and challenges of living out their faith. The children receive Learner Leaflets that include activities families can try out to put their faith into action throughout the week.

Breakfast Club – 5th and 6th graders move up to ‘Breakfast Club’ on Sunday mornings. They meet on  the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays of the month down in the Harbor. Our middle school youth are encouraged to attend worship and receive communion on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month.

Confirmation – for 7th and 8th graders (in October of their 9th grade year, the students “affirm” their baptism in our Confirmation Ceremony.

Elementary Xpress – for 1st  through 6th graders offered on Wednesday nights for children who are waiting for family to finish with adult choir, Bible study, or confirmation class.

A.S.K.K. (After School Kids Klub) – St. John’s After School Kid’s Klub (ASKK) meets every Wednesday from after school until 5:00 p.m. for students in grades 3-6.

St. John’s wants to create a fun and inviting place for your child to play after a long day at school.  Our Harbor is equipped with air hockey, foosball and carpet ball tables.  We also provide board games, crafts, and other activities as well as daily snacks and a quiet room for homework.  Students in Voices of Hope are able to go right from ASKK to choir.

Bussing from Grandview or Hilltop is provided by the School District. Arrangements must be made by the parent with the school system.  Shirley Hills’ students can walk to the church.

Children’s Choir/Worship Arts on Wednesdays – Voices of Hope music and choir is for kids in grades 2-6. Practice is on Wednesday from 5:00pm-5:30pm followed by WoW, Worship-arts on Wednesday. Through fun songs and art we learn about hope in our world and in our life of faith.

Christmas Program – All children 3 years old through 6th grade are invited to participate in a special program of music and word retelling the wonderful Christmas story.

Parent/Child ‘Grow in Faith Events’

Grow in Faith Events 2016-17

In Baptism, we make a promise to provide instruction in the Christian faith for our children. Here at St. John’s, we want to help celebrate this journey of faith development with special family learning events. These events are educational, experiential, spiritual and fun for parents and children to attend together and will either happen on a Saturday or Sunday morning. The events are designed to be introductions to faith concepts that you as parents can take home and continue to share and discuss with your children.  There is one event for each grade level per year.
